So before you know it, you will have spent more on the cartridges of ink than on the actual printer itself. Another somewhat less obvious “cost” of printing is how long it takes for a job, when sent to your printer, to complete. If you value your time as “money” you will likely want faster printing. I am one of those people who can’t stand when my print job takes a long time and I have to stand there as the paper slowly inches out of the machine. A laser printer is faster and, over time, will save you time waiting around. There is a reason why laser printers were originally used with more frequency in an office setting: they can handle between 15 and 100 pages per minute. Inkjet printers, in comparison, can usually print 16 pages per minute. Again, if your printing needs are minimal this speed won’t be a deal breaker.
If you are printing a lot of documents and running simultaneous print jobs at home, you might care a lot about speed. A metric tied to speed is print volume.
