What To Consider When Buying Large Computer Monitors

When buying a large monitor you will want to consider a few key variables. Firstly, you will want to know how much is too much and what size is best aligned with your needs. Do you want to look at a large volume of content or data? Do you want a monitor that can hang from a wall (i.e. a wall mount) or is placed on a desk? Or, Do you use multiple monitors or just one large one?

These are the most fundamental questions you want to answer first. This guide will walk you through additional variables to consider to help you make an informed purchasing decision of a large computer monitor for your home office.

    Size Matters

Firstly, size really does matter. If you want a monitor larger than 27 inches it is going to take up space – on your desk or mounted on a wall. If you want a large monitor, all the power to you! There are few better feelings than having all of your content, work, and documents on one screen. But a very large monitor also comes with some trade-offs. It might block your view. It might be heavy, or reduce usable space on your desk.

Understand how much space you have and where the monitor will sit prior to purchasing it. Some monitors are flat while others are curved. Both have trade-offs relative to size, price, and space utilization. Curved monitors are a bit softer on the eyes as they absorb light which helps make viewing content more immersive. Flat monitors tend to be more prevalent and cost less because companies can manufacture them at scale more cheaply. Large flat monitors are easier to mount on walls compared with large curved monitors.

Speaking of mounting, you can see our review on triple monitor stands and quad monitor stands if you have multiple monitors you want to mount.

    Quality Matters

When buying a larger screen, know what ratio and screen quality you are optimizing for. These attributes are linearly correlated with price. Most expensive monitors that are large are more expensive because they have great aspect ratios and resolutions.

You may care more or less about this depending on what you are projecting. For example, if you are streaming videos or visual content, you will likely care deeply about color aspect ratios. If you are merely using large computer monitors to stream or project static content (i.e. data feeds or numbers) in the background, you might care less.

Again, size does really matter when thinking about aspect ratios and resolution. If you want video input, a large monitor will support that and can even replace your television. These attributes – size, screen resolution, and quality should drive your purchasing decision. The refresh rate of a monitor will help you understand how responsive it is and the clarity of the image it can project.

    Size and Weight

27 inches and above means the monitor is large. Among the largest monitors that will fit on a desk is usually 49 inches. As monitors increase in size, they also get heavier. Additionally, it is harder to view a large monitor and all of its content from up close.

You likely need a chair that is a few feet away from the monitor display itself. This will impact your seating arrangement and can impact the ergonomic quality of the work space. You should strongly consider the ergonomic impact of this over time. Are you looking at the entire monitor or only parts of it? Do you need to move your chair or neck or body to see it? 49 inches is over 4 feet. This means that you might need to move your chair or feet to see from one side to the other.

If you want to hang a large computer monitor on a wall you need to make sure that the beam or column can support it. A common use-case for people that buy very large computer monitors is that they don’t want two smaller ones. Getting one or two monitors is your choice but recognize that two smaller units might give you more flexibility. On the other hand, a large monitor gives you a unified and single display. Both are great options for the home office.

A If you have a large monitor, it’s also important that your laptop be on the same height level so that you can look back and forth without straining your neck. Consider looking into a laptop stand.

How much do large monitors cost?

A large monitor varies in price depending on the fit and finish. Expect to pay somewhere between $200 and $500 for a good quality monitor larger than 27 inches. When thinking about price also consider what other activities besides home office work you will do with the monitor. Will you only work on it? Will you play games on it? Do you want to stream or watch TV or movies via the web on your monitor?

The reason these questions are important to answer is the answers will dictate the type of display you end up purchasing. For example, I have a home office with a lot of natural light. As such, I care deeply about aspect ratio because that enables me to see the screen in stunning clarity even when it’s bright out. An immersive experience is less important to me because I am not a gamer. But I hate glare and selected a monitor that had anti-glare technology built in.

I work on my large monitor and stream video so I also care about resolution. I have a pleasant view from my window so I prefer to use a monitor in the 30 inch range. Anything larger would block light and my ability to see outside.

    Final Thoughts

A final note about cost and size: some monitors are rectangular and others are curved as noted above. This is important to consider for your home office as they give off different feels. Curved monitors yield fewer reflections. I use a curved monitor at times in my home primarily because of the light.

However a flat monitor can bring many pluses to the work environment too. For one thing, flat monitors tend to be a bit more affordable while still providing lots of screen real estate for work and play. And I love when a large flat monitor can be mounted to a wall to save desk space. When buying a large monitor consider the attributes articulated above and you will be well on your way to picking a monitor that helps you work, consume content, and view your favorite files all on a single display.
