Buyers Guide To Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones

If you want to embrace the best of headphone technology, you will want to optimize for two key product variables. These are wireless technology and noise cancelling technology. As the names imply, wireless headphones means you won’t have to deal with connecting your headphones to your computer, monitor, or phone with a wired connection. The connection will happen via Bluetooth or pairing. And, it will enable you a great range of motion and physical freedom.

Noise cancelling headphones, is just one subset of the broader wireless headphone space. And they do just what they say: they emit white noise through the ear buds to mitigate external background noise. Wireless noise cancelling headphones are, in my opinion, at the top of the headphone food-chain. They represent the best of what money can buy. And, as a result, they yield great listening experiences.

Why I Love Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones and You Will Too

I have a very busy schedule and am frequently on video conference calls, listening to music, or exercising. I need to focus for long stretches of time and blocking out noise is important to that goal. In addition to focus, I also greatly value hearing what others are saying when I am on video calls. I have spent so much time asking the following question: “can you please repeat what you just said?” This was before purchasing noise cancelling headphones.

There were a number of distractions that were facing me. The sound of the garbage truck, kids yelling outside, or even ambient noise. These were all distractions that my Bose Noise Cancelling Wireless Bluetooth Headphones 700 solved for. Just by placing them over my ears I enter a space of serenity. What other product can I buy or use that gives me so much freedom and peace of mind so rapidly?

    Wireless Technology Means Total Freedom

Many wireless headphones have active and passive sound settings so you can dictate what type of listening mode you want. When there is even a bit of background noise I switch on the active setting and am totally immersed. But this freedom from noise pales in comparison with the benefits of not having wires. Gone are the days of knots, tangled chords, or ripping my headphones off by accident when throwing my jacket or backpack off. Having a full range of motion – for swiveling in my chair, running, walking about – these are ultimate freedoms. It is nearly impossible to think about using wired headphones again.

    Charging and Powering Your Day

One of the things you will need to be aware of is that as you use your headphones more (think: quality, noise cancelling, and without wires), you will need to charge them. If you are primarily working from home, this will be easy enough as you are likely never too far from a power outlet. But it is an important consideration.

I have some friends that are forgetful and don’t like charging their technology. If this is you, you might need to learn new habits as your wireless noise cancelling headphones might have a full usage charge of between 15-25 hours. My Bose pair lasts roughly 20 hours on a charge which is good enough to get me through a work week. In short, you only really need to think about charging before long flights or commutes.

I’d like to give one final note about wireless technology. Noise cancelling headphones are ideal if you want to watch movies or TV without waking others. If you have a partner or kids with different sleep schedules, wireless headphones are great. They allow you to watch TV or stream content while not distracting others.

I have personally benefited from this approach. It would be a stretch to say that wireless noise cancelling headphones saved a relationship. But, it’s a statement that contains some truth. By enabling me to have an immersive sound experience of the highest quality and dexterity I was able to enjoy shows and video streaming but in a quiet and respectful manner. So this type of product not only can help you, but it can help your loved ones as well.

Voice Activation and Weight Matters With Your Headphones

Some wireless noise cancelling headphones also have built-in smart voice technology. It allows you to interact with Apple’ Siri, Google Home, or Amazon’s Alexa. If you use these products in your home office you should use that as a criteria for which headset to purchase. Additionally, some wireless headphones are in-ear and others fit above the head. If you are a dual user of your headphones for work and play you would be wise to consider the weight of the product itself. That is because headphones that fit above the head are often bulkier and less suited for running, for example.

In-ear headphones, which are more akin to earbuds, can offer noise canceling benefits and are wireless. These tend to be best suited for dynamic use-cases like running or biking. They are also useful when you are on the phone and active (i.e. walking around and in constant motion). In conclusion, there are many great wireless noise cancelling headphones on the market. Picking a good pair is not hard to do but you will want to optimize for price, size, and use-case.

    Types of Noise Cancelling Technology

A new type of technology used in Bluetooth wireless headphones, earphones and headsets to reduce distractions in noisy environments is called active noise cancellation technology.

The big advantage of this type of technology is that you can listen to music at a lower level, so you don’t have to crank up the tune or make a phone call to hear it clearly. The manufacturers of active noise cancellation technology actually introduce different white noise sounds and vibrations to compensate for noise. Normally there is a button that you press to activate active noise suppression, which then sets the tone, counteracts sound waves directed at your ears, and has the effect of eliminating sounds that distract you.

The electronics on board then take it from there, and the headphones create a sound that is a combination of sound waves and anti-phase, which nullifies what you should be listening to, namely the music coming out of the headphones and everything that happens outside. Compared to sudden, random noises like people talking, it is easier for a headphone to detect and balance them.

Examples of Great Noise Cancelling Headphone Brands

The Bose Noise Cancelling Wireless Bluetooth Headphones 700 greatly impressed me with the sound quality and noise reduction I found when listening to the music using this product. This headphone delivers great sound and good noise cancellation. While an over-the-ear model typically has the best audio quality and battery life, active noise cancelling is made possible by the fact that the headphones are more portable and cheaper than a standard earphone.

Apple’s AirPods were the first mainstream earphones to be completely wireless, and the Pro version, which was released in 2019, supports active noise cancellation as well.

Noise canceling headphones use active noise cancelling technology to reduce background noise and provide an exceptionally comfortable and relaxing listening environment in areas with high ambient noise. Passive noise cancelling simply means that sound waves are physically prevented from reaching the ears.

When using noise cancelling headphones, you will notice how the low frequency portion of noise is canceled by active noise control (ANC). Noise and anti-noise cancel each other out, resulting in a softer ambient sound. When the sound pressure of the sound waves is high, the suppressing waves are low, and the microphone emits waveforms that reverse the waveform so that they are exactly at the stage in which they absorb the “unwanted” sound, or vice versa.

Noise-proof headphones are useful for travel and loud home office environments, especially for workers with kids or pets.
