    Buyer’s guide for mechanical keyboards

There are a few things to consider when buying a mechanical keyboard. Let’s sift through the different factors to ensure you are well aware of the key decisions you’ll have to make.

    What are mechanical keyboards?

A mechanical keyboard is a keyboard built with high quality key switches. These keys are typically spring activated, which vary from the rubber dome keyboards that are most common in the market. While the first widely used keyboards in the 1980s were mechanical, the 1990s brought an influx of rubber dome keyboards, which now represent over 90% of all keyboards in the market.

Many people prefer the satisfaction of a mechanical key stroke as opposed to an inexpensive but dissatisfying feel that cheap keyboards provide. There are many factors that contribute to a mechanical keyboard’s feel such as switches, key construction, framing, functionality, type print methods, PCB board, and fun LED lighting.

    Are mechanical keyboards worth it?

Mechanical keyboards are worth paying a premium if you do a lot of typing and are dissatisfied with the feel of your current keyboard. Gamers in particular enjoy them quite a lot! You may also want to look into a typewriter keyboard which has a similar feel.

With mechanical keyboards, you can get a much clearer tactile and audible confirmation when you’re hitting the keys. This will allow you to make more accurate keystrokes and will require less effort. This leads to less fatigue and soreness in your hands and forearms. For this reason, mechanical keyboards can be a great benefit to your ergonomic setup which includes an ergonomic chair and desk.

The pricing varies between about 40$ on the cheap end to upwards of 250$. Obviously, you get what you pay for. On the higher end, you are generally getting far better quality. In addition, more expensive keyboards offer bluetooth or usb wireless connections. Also, more expensive keyboards come with number pads while cheaper keyboards forgo that option. All of these factors are totally up to the buyer. You should purchase what suits your needs the most. For instance, if you work heavily with data and numbers, having a number pad is crucial. If you don’t, you can generally get by with the top number row that accompanies all keyboards

    Different sizes

As mentioned above, mechanical keyboards come in different sizes. Let’s define each one so you are aware of what you are purchasing.

Full-size (100%) – This is your standard keyboard with a full size number pad on the right hand side. These come standard with 104 keys for USA-English keyboards.

1800-Compact – The 1800 Compact keyboard contains just as many keys, but in a more compact layout. In this, the number pad is more squished together and right next to the main part of the keyboard. On the plus side, it saves you a bit of desktop space while keeping the number pad. On the downside, it can be a little difficult to find the right key since things are a bit closer together. You might make a few more typing mistakes.

Tenkeyless (TKL, 87%, 80%) – These are the most common mechanical keyboard layout. It is the same layout as a full size keyboard but without the number pad. PNK Stuff’s compact keyboard is a good example of this type of layout.

60% – These ones are shrunken down even further, saving you more desktop space. They don’t have arrow keys or the Function keys (F keys). Needless to say, working from home on these can be a bit tricky and we recommend staying clear of this style unless you know exactly what you are looking for. There are even more shrunken down keyboards than this, but we won’t go into those.

    Customizations

Lastly, there are a few ways you can customize your mechanical keyboard. The most popular options are with backlights and different color key caps. Having a variety of key cap colors on your keyboard can serve as the focal point of any desktop. They look amazing! Keyboard backlights are also popular, especially for gamers and people who like to work in the dark. Seeing each letter or symbol light up on your keyboard provides utility when searching for the right key. We think it also looks magnificent in the dark this way.
