Keyboards are an essential product for working – and in particular working remotely. They are a useful extension of either a desktop computer or a smaller laptop and can enhance work performance and output.

Choosing the right keyboard for your WFH setup is important for productivity and ergonomics. It can also be challenging: many keyboards have the same size and types of keys but have important yet subtle differences. These differences include the angling of the keys, the space between the keyboard and certain macro buttons, and if the keyboard is usable for gaming or purely for work.

A keyboard can pay great dividends over time. It keeps your fingers and wrists comfortable and healthy which will enable you to produce better quality work. When selecting a keyboard you will need to consider the ergonomic nature, the keyboard’s layout, and whether it is wired or wireless. There are other things to consider but they are of lesser importance. For example, if you will play games with your keyboard you might want to think about gaming functions and gaming technology in particular (i.e. built-in scrolling mouse or dedicated gaming keys). Likewise, you may want to consider the costs. A cheap keyboard that is good quality can start around $25. A premium keyboard can cost upwards of $100. Given how long you can keep and use a keyboard (i.e. years) it is an investment worth making.

Wired keyboards, as the name suggests, connect via your computer via a USB or USB-C connection. Wired keyboards have the benefit of not needing extra batteries or overnight charges. On the other hand, wireless keyboards, which connect via Bluetooth to your computer or tablet, are more versatile and produce less clutter as a by-product. Wireless keyboards are aligned with minimalist desks and less clutter. To derive the list below, we tried dozens of keyboards and plugged them into – or connected via Bluetooth – to laptops, desktops, and tablets. Each keyboard was put through rigorous testing across ergonomic layout, price, battery life, comfortably, size, and utility.

The best keyboards for working from home will be ones that allows you to type efficiently while naturally matching your typing style and ergonomic positioning. We reviewed dozens of keyboards to bring you the best keyboards for working from home.

    • Beautiful, sleek design
    • Comfortable to type on
    • USB-C adapter included

The Matias Wired Aluminum Keyboard for Mac is a worthy successor to Apple’s original wired aluminum keyboard, and comes in silver or space gray. It offers all the beauty and functionality of the Apple original, plus a few extra features, like a volume control dial on the top edge. The 2 port USB 2.0 hub is convenient for plugging in a mouse, and the keyboard comes with a USB-C adapter on the end of its USB 2.0 cable, for convenience in connecting to Macs old or new.

The key travel on the Matias keyboard is 2 mm, which is the way Apple made its keyboards for over a decade. In the last couple of years, Apple has gone thinner, with key travel under 1 mm. The longer key travel on the older Apple and current Matias keyboards feels better and is more ergonomic.

This keyboard is popular all over the world, and Matias makes models in many other country versions.

    Best Keyboards Buyer Guide

Keyboards are highly important to your computing experience: they can make typing, creating content, and replying to emails easy. As mentioned in our article “Working From Home: How to Turn Pain Into Pleasure” having an ergonomic keyboard is key to successful posture, typing, and content creation. A good keyboard minimizes the need for you to over utilize your mouse. Additionally, it helps keep your arms perpendicular to your body. When buying a keyboard there are a few key things you will want to consider.

    Ergonomics

The nature of your hands and your body and how they will interact with the keyboard is very important. A good keyboard can protect your wrists, forearms, and fingers from damage and pain over time. Depending on your needs you can buy a flat keyboard as well. These tend to be cheaper, require less space, but also might place greater strain on your body.

If you have a work from home job that requires ample typing you will want to consider an ergonomic keyboard. Keyboard manufacturers produce ergonomic models designed to force typists to position their hands at more comfortable angles and lower stress points for typing joints. Such designs can range from only changing a keyboard’s angle and keeping the hands and wrists in a natural angle, and separating the keyboard to holding the hands and wrists in “v” shape. We can’t stress this enough: if you are typing a lot and want to protect your wrists and arms, buy an ergonomically friendly keyboard.

    Layout

Apple keyboards use Cmd (command) and Option keys, and many newer keyboards include Windows and dedicated menu screens for working specifically with Windows 10. When selecting a keyboard you should think about which computer (Windows, Apple Mac, Chrome) you are going to use with it. For example, one of my computers is a MacBook. But my keyboard is made by Microsoft. While I can use this keyboard it has some keys and commands that are different than when I use my native MacBook keyboard. These differences are small but can alter your experience, hence why I am flagging it for you!

Wired vs Wireless (Radio Frequency & Bluetooth) keyboards

Wired keyboards are exactly as they sound: keyboards that connect to your computer. Perhaps you have a laptop and want a larger or ergonomically friendly keyboard. Maybe you have a tablet. Or maybe you have a computer tower and monitor but no ability to add input. In all of these use-cases you will need to decide if you want a keyboard that physically connects (via a cable) or electronically connects (via radio frequency or Bluetooth) to the device in question. When a wired keyboard connects to your computer, you start using it.

One downside of a wired keyboard is that the wires might create a feeling of clutter. On the other hand, wireless keyboards are considered minimalist and will leave your desk with a more modern look (without wires going from the keyboard to the computer or monitor). But with this flexibility comes a cost: you need to keep your keyboard charged. This can be done with a cable (i.e. micro USB) or with batteries. So the level of effort to maintain this type of keyboard is a bit higher. Given the increased technology in these keyboards (to connect to your computer) they tend to be a bit more expensive.

    Other Kinds of Keyboards

While we focused on your average looking keyboards in this page, there are a variety of other keyboards which you may enjoy. There are typewriter keyboards for people looking for a more vintage feel. There are mechanical keyboards for people who love to hear the sound of each key being punched. And there are plenty of cheap keyboards for people on a budget.
